Te Vaka

Te Vaka is a Polynesian music band with voices from various Polynesian countries. The band was founded by Opetaia Foa'i who is a Composer, Singer, Guitarist and Percussionist from Tuvalu and Tokelau.

While Opetaia is the lead singer, his daughter, Olivia Foa'i is also quite well known for her singing and choreography in the group. You have definitely heard her voice if you've watched Disney's 'Moana', as she was the first voice heard in the opening track.

The group has a wide Polynesian background, with all of their members being from different countries. There is a total of 9 people in the band right now, including Opetaia and Olivia, also Mataia Foa'i, the youngest son of Opetaia, the percussionist composer from New Zealand, Tokelau and Tuvalu, Sulata Foai-Amiatu, a singer from Tokelau, Douglas Bernard, a percussionist, keyboardist and singer from Samoa, Joe Toomata, a electric guitarist and percussionist from Samoa, Neil Forrest, a bassist, flute player and percussionist from New Zealand, Etueni Pita, a dancer from Tokelau, Tuvalu and Cook Islands and Dave Kuresa, a dancer from Samoa.

Te Vaka's music is claimed to be "traditionally influenced but definitely contemporary". The log drum is said to be a really important part of their sound, and to Opetaia, it represents the "infectious rhythm of the south seas".  Te Vaka's songs are mostly in the language of Tokelau, however in more recent albums, other languages such as Samoan and Tuvaluan are performed as well. Opetaia says that using the different languages is his way of keeping them alive. What inspired Opetaia to create Te Vaka was his multicultural upbringing, and that was a big part of what inspired the music that Te Vaka produces. Opetaia's musical background spans both the traditional and the diverse influences of contemporary pop culture.

Musical Examples

"Lakalaka"

"Lakalaka" is less meaningful about the lyrics, and is made mostly as a dancing piece of music. "Lakalaka" its self means to step briskly, or carefully.

"We know the way"

"We Know the Way" is a song by Opetaia Foa'i written for Disney's "Moana", and is a song about the ancestors of Moana that used to be voyagers. It is a song about knowing where you are, and not being afraid to explore and face challenges.

Group Achievements

Te Vaka has achieved a lot within their 27 years of being in the music industry. In 1998, Te Vaka opened a concert for Ringo Starr, ex drummer of the hit band 'the Beatles'. By this time they had released their first album "Te Vaka". Te Vaka has released 12 albums so far. Their music has ranged in so many different languages native to Polynesian culture, and a diverse range of costumes and instruments. They have toured the world consistently since 1997 and won an impressive number of awards such as "Best Pacific Music Album" for their albums Tutuki (2004) and Olatia (2007) from the New Zealand Music Awards. They also won the award for "Best Pacific Group" in 2008 from the 2008 Pacific Music Awards.

Song Analysis

Pate Pate!!

- "Pate Pate" uses third and fifth harmonies on on the main melody, which is sung by female alto and soprano voices. The melodic contour is pretty calm. The song has a predictable and simple melody, and is in a major key. The accompaniment is played on guitar with with chords.

- Regarding duration, the time signature is in 2/4. The dynamic levels are at forte for majority of the song I would say.

- The dynamics of the song would be described as "Vivace" or lively and fast and at 138BPM.

- Tone colour in this song could be described as happy, warm, dancy, rich and bright.

- Texture of the song is thick and quite layered. There is at least 5 layers of instrumentation including the Pate, the the acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, lead vocals and various voices of harmonies. It is a heterophonic piece of music with the mens and women's voices contrasting.
